ORIGIN OF CHAPTER NAME

The General Marquis Calmes Chapter of Versailles, Kentucky, was organized in 1923, with Mrs. R. Keene Arnold as Organizing Regent.

The following article (and undated clipping) is from a local newspaper.

"The local Daughters of the Amerian Revolution Chapter was organized on May 11, 1923, at the home of Mrs. R. K. Arnold, in Versailles, with 24 charter members and was given the name "Marquis Calmes Chapter."

Mrs. Theodore Harris read a paper on Gen. Calmes which was written by her father, the late Captain John Andrew Steele. Gen. Calmes came to Woodford County in 1783, with Col. Thomas Marshall, and patented 1,000 acres adjoining Marshall's "Buckpond." His home was known as "Caneland." The remains of the old Calmes log dwelling and his unique burial place were, in 1923, a part of the Ernest Dunlap farm. Gen. Calmes was born in Virginia, educated in France, fought in the battle of Saratoga and Monmouth, and was a Brigadier General of Kentucky Volunteers, in the War of 1812."
